All people, pets, and plants must be removed from the structure before fumigation. This includes fish and seeds or bulbs intended for planting. A fumigation can take from six hours to one week depending on the type of infestation, dosage, temperature, size of the structure, and other factors.

Reduce soil-to-wood contact around your house
1. Remove all lumber, wood, mulch, paper, cardboard or other cellulose-based debris from around the foundation.
2. Stack firewood at least 20 feet away from your home, and raise the stored wood at least 8 inches off the ground.
3. Create a 4-inch barrier between mulch and your home.

Water storage tanks should be cleaned and disinfected a minimum of once a year. In communities where the water supply has high levels of sediment at certain times of the year, cleaning more often is recommended. The rule of thumb is to do it whenever your household water tastes, looks, or smells unusual.
